On June 17, 1995 I married Steven John Timmins.

In the fall of 1998, I began grad school at Temple University in Philadelphia. I intended to get a Master’s in Journalism because, hey, my company was paying for it. On graduation day in 2001, my professor told me that just 24 more credits I could have myself a Ph.D.! How could I say no? So I began my first class of my doctoral career on September 10, 2001. After my (and everyone else’s) world change the next day, I considered not continuing. But I was already managing a job and school–and I’m not one to quit. I worked steadily and finished my final class in Spring 2004. All that was left was the dissertation!

Also in spring 2004, we discovered we were going to have a baby in the fall. Our Jake arrived October 1, 2004–5 weeks early and just 36 hours after I went on emergency bed rest. Despite my plan to bang out the dissertation during maternity leave, that did not happen.

On April 21, 2008 I planned to defend my dissertation. But that is also the day my daughter decided to make her appearance, so I’m glad we cancelled the defense. Phoebe was a joy, but my plans to get the dissertation done during her maternity leave also failed.

I left TV news on the last day of 2009 and was determined to complete the dissertation and begin a career in academe. I completed the work and revisions, and earned my doctorate in the summer of 2010. I began my job as an Assistant Professor at the University of Delaware in the Fall of 2010.
